Panasonic TZ300: Best Compact Zoom Available New, But Is That Enough?

The TZ300 wins by default — its rivals are ancient and discontinued — but 'best available new' is a low bar when the competition stopped showing up years ago. If you're recommending a compact travel zoom to a client or relative who won't buy used, this is currently the answer; for anyone else, the tradeoffs Panasonic asks you to accept (likely the small sensor and fixed lens compromise) are the same ones that killed enthusiasm for this category in the first place.
